This week, get to know your gut and how to improve your digestive health from mouth to out!  Yes, folks, we are going to go there :)  Have your pens ready because this is perhaps the most important discussion yet.

We had a great class last night and learned all about our metabolism! As a group, our challengers lost 21.6 pounds for the week!! Our biggest loser for the week was Cheryl, losing 5 pounds and winning a FREE shake!! Marilyn won the drawing and recieved a FREE tea sample! We had some really good disscusion about how our metabolism works, what we can do to help boost it and what slows it down. We also talked about some common myths about metabolism. Great class!

 High-Fiber Foods
High-fiber foods have been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and to help to keep your digestive system healthy. Find out which foods are high-fiber foods.
Dietary Fiber
Dietary fiber is only found in plants, and functions like a skeleton to help maintain their shape and structure. Humans eat plants but we cannot digest the fiber so it passes through the small intestine into the colon. The fiber helps to keep the colon healthy. Some disorders like diverticulitis, constipation and irregularity may be connected with not getting enough fiber in the diet.
Types of Dietary Fiber
Insoluble fiber is the type of dietary fiber found in high-fiber foods like whole grains, nuts, wheat bran and vegetables. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water so it helps to move material through the colon faster by increasing the bulk of the stool. This can be very helpful to people who suffer from constipation or irregularity. Diets high in insoluble fiber may also decrease the risk of diabetes.
Soluble fiber is also found in many high-fiber foods like oats, citrus fruits, apples, barley, psyllium, flax seeds and beans. Soluble fiber absorbs water, which helps to soften stools making them easier to eliminate from the body. Some soluble fibers called beta glucan bind to bile acids which contain cholesterol. A high-fiber diet with this type of soluble fiber has been shown to reduce cholesterol closer to healthy levels.

According to the Institute of Medicine:
The recommended intake for total fiber for adults 50 years and younger is set at 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women, while for men and women over 50 it is 30 and 21 grams per day, respectively, due to decreased food consumption.
People who currently have low-fiber diets may want to increase their daily intake of high-fiber foods slowly because some fiber may increase gas and bloating. The body adjusts the increased amount of fiber over time and the gas and bloating will decrease. Class 3 Week 5

Fiber Supplements
Fiber supplements are available and may be added to a low-fiber diet, but fiber supplements shouldn't replace high-fiber foods in your diet because high-fiber foods are usually high in vitamins and minerals as well. Tips for fitting in fiber
Need ideas for high-fiber meals and snacks? Try these suggestions:

Start your day with a high-fiber breakfast cereal — 5 or more grams of fiber per serving. Opt for cereals with "bran" or "fiber" in the name. Or add a few tablespoons of unprocessed wheat bran to your favorite cereal.

Add crushed bran cereal or unprocessed wheat bran to baked products such as meatloaf, breads, muffins, casseroles, cakes and cookies. You can also use bran products as a crunchy topping for casseroles, salads or cooked vegetables.

Switch to whole-grain breads. These breads list whole wheat, whole-wheat flour or another whole grain as the first ingredient on the label. Look for a brand with at least 2 grams of dietary fiber per serving.

Substitute whole-grain flour for half or all of the white flour when baking bread. Whole-grain flour is heavier than white flour. In yeast breads, use a bit more yeast or let the dough rise longer. When using baking powder, increase it by 1 teaspoon for every 3 cups of whole-grain flour.

Eat more whole grains and whole-grain products. Experiment with brown rice, barley, whole-wheat pasta and bulgur.

Take advantage of ready-to-use vegetables. Mix chopped frozen broccoli into prepared spaghetti sauce. Snack on baby carrots.

Eat more beans, peas and lentils. Add kidney beans to canned soup or a green salad. Or make nachos with refried black beans, baked tortilla chips and salsa.

Eat fruit at every meal. Apples, bananas, oranges, pears and berries are good sources of fiber.

Make snacks count. Fresh and dried fruit, raw vegetables, and low-fat popcorn and whole-grain crackers are all good choices.
High-fiber foods are good for your health. But adding too much fiber too quickly can cause intestinal gas, abdominal bloating and cramping. Increase fiber in your diet gradually over a period of a few weeks. This allows the natural bacteria in your digestive system to adjust to the change. Also, drink plenty of water. Fiber works best when it absorbs water, making your stool soft and bulky. Without the added water, you could become constipated.


Digestive Health
Human health is like the health of an automobile. Just as high octane gasoline is not sufficient to provide a high-performance car with full power and efficiency if an engine tune-up is badly needed, likewise, no matter how nutritiously we eat... we will not experience wellness and energy if our individual cells (the microscopic engines of our body) and our digestive system engine are in need of a tune-up. Engine sludge degrades the performance of cars and humans.
When it comes to figuring out if you're digesting things properly and eating healthy, Dr. Mehmet Oz says that you should rely on your senses in the bathroom. For starters, have you ever thought about the importance of what your bowel movement sounds like when it hits the water? Listen up! "You want to hear what the stool, the poop, sounds like when it hits the water. If it sounds like a bombardier, you know, 'plop, plop, plop,' that's not right because it means you're constipated. It means the food is too hard by the time it comes out. It should hit the water like a diver from Acapulco hits the water [swoosh]." The next thing Dr. Oz recommends is looking at your stool—c'mon, you've done it before! You should look twice—look at the shape and then, the color. "It should be an S shape and you want to make sure the color's normal because the color of the poop tells you a lot about how you made it," Dr. Oz says. "You don't want pieces. Food is a medicine for you. It helps you. If the stool is in pieces by the time you finished digesting your food, you don't have enough of it left to poop out in the right way and probably it's hurt the colon that has to process it.” At the end of the day you can analyze your body really effectively by looking at what comes out of your body. Here's a pop quiz. What part of your body is most similar to your brain? The surprising answer is your small bowel, where most digestion occurs. "That's the saying, you know, you've got blank for blank," Dr. Oz jokes. "But the thing about the small bowel is it has primitive messenger chemicals that tell the bowel how to work. If your bowel's not happy, those same chemicals influence your brain." In this bowel the green stuff is bile, material in the process of being digested. Dr. Oz says it's important to listen to what your bowel tells you. "A lot of times you don't pick up on the subtle clues," he says. "It will tell you that you feel washed out or tired or a little bit of cramping. Or, you know, if you wake up in the morning and just don't feel like yourself, you probably had something allergic that you didn't clue into."

Not going "number two" enough? New health guidelines suggest we should drink about eight glasses of water a day, about 64 ounces, and get 25 grams of fiber to stay regular and healthy. World-renowned heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz says that if we can work on
our fiber and water intake, our digestive systems could dramatically improve. "High fiber comes in vegetable form: artichokes, lima beans, soybeans," he says. "You can get fruits that have lots of fiber like grapefruit, blackberries and raspberries."
Another fantastic source of fiber is whole grains. Dr. Oz says that eating whole grains isn't just the latest craze—they offer multiple benefits to your health. You may have already heard about the health benefits of whole wheat bread and oatmeal, but now doctors say other whole grains like spelt, bulgar and quinoa can reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure and even help prevent heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. They say that whole grains help flush fat and cholesterol out of your system and provide powerful antioxidants that help you stay healthier, look younger and live longer. The USDA just recently recommended eating at least three servings a day. One of Oprah's favorite whole grain choices is steel cut oatmeal for its crunchy texture. Dr. Oz says steel cut oatmeal and other whole grain foods are high in fiber—great for digestion. "[Steel cut oatmeal] doesn't have a lot of calories, and it drags the food [you eat] along so it can't become like putty—until it gets to the very end," Dr. Oz says. "Whole grains are an insoluble fiber, so it pulls water with it and it binds to all the other stuff you're eating that may not be so good for you. It gets the whole bolus moving on."
Foods rich in magnesium like beets, raisins, dates and soybeans are important because they get your bowels moving! The more natural, the better, says Dr. Oz. "The easy part of this message is all of these foods come out of the ground looking the way they look when you eat them," he says. "That's the only thing you have to remember. 'Does it look the way it looked when it came out of the ground when I eat it? There are no white bread plants!"

Metabolism and weight loss: How you burn calories

You likely know your metabolism is linked to your weight. But do you know how?
Common belief holds that a slim person's metabolism is high and an overweight person's metabolism is low. But this isn't usually the case. Metabolism alone doesn't determine your weight.
Rather, weight is dependent on the balance of calories consumed versus calories burned. Take in more calories than your body needs, and you gain weight. Take in less and you lose weight. Metabolism, then, is the engine that burns these calories and is the scale that regulates your energy needs.
Metabolism: Converting food into energy
Stated simply, metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy. During this biochemical process, calories — from carbohydrates, fats and proteins — are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.
The number of calories your body burns each day is called your total energy expenditure. The following three factors make up your total energy expenditure:

asic needs. Even when your body is at rest, it requires energy for the basics, such as fuel for organs, breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, plus growing and repairing cells. Calories expended to cover these basic functions are your basal metabolic rate. Typically, a person's basal metabolic rate is the largest portion of energy use, representing two-thirds to three-quarters of the calories used each day. Energy needs for these basic functions stay fairly consistent and aren't easily changed.
F
ood processing. Digesting, absorbing, transporting and storing the food you consume also takes calories. This accounts for about 10 percent of the calories used each day. For the most part, your body's energy requirement to process food stays relatively steady and isn't easily changed.
P
hysical activity. Physical activity — such as playing tennis, walking to the store, chasing after the dog and any other movement — accounts for the remainder of calories used. You control the number of calories burned depending on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities.
Metabolism and your weight
It may seem logical to think that significant weight gain or being overweight is related to a low metabolism or possibly even a condition such as underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). In reality, it's very uncommon for excess weight to be related to a low metabolism. And most people who are overweight don't have an underlying condition, such as hypothyroidism. However, a medical evaluation can determine whether a medical condition could be influencing your weight.
Weight gain is more likely due to an energy imbalance — consuming more calories than your body burns. To lose weight, then, you need to create an energy deficit by eating fewer calories, increasing the number of calories you burn through physical activity, or preferably both.
Influences on your calorie needs
If you and everyone else were physically and functionally identical, it would be easy to determine the standard energy needs. But many factors influence calorie requirements, including body size and composition, age, and sex.

ody size and composition. To function properly, a bigger body mass requires more energy (more calories) than does a smaller body mass. Also, muscle burns more calories than fat does. So the more muscle you have in relation to fat, the higher your basal metabolic rate.

ge. As you get older, the amount of muscle tends to decrease and fat accounts for more of your weight. Metabolism also slows naturally with age. Together these changes reduce your calorie needs.
S
ex. Men usually have less body fat and more muscle than do women of the same age and weight. This is why men generally have a higher basal metabolic rate and burn more calories than women do.

Burning more calories
Your ability to change your basal metabolism is limited. However, you can increase daily exercise and activity to build muscle tissue and burn more calories.
Regular aerobic exercise, such as walking daily for 30 minutes or more, is an excellent way to burn calories. Strength training exercises, such as weight training, also are important because they help counteract muscle loss associated with aging. And since muscle tissue burns more calories, muscle mass is a key factor in weight loss.
Even though regularly scheduled aerobic exercise is best for weight loss, any extra movement helps burn calories. Look for ways to walk and move around a few minutes more each day. Lifestyle activities, such as gardening, washing your car and even housework, burn calories and contribute to weight loss. Taking the stairs more often and parking farther away at the store also are simple ways to burn more calories.
Your metabolism influences your energy needs, but it's your food intake and physical activity that ultimately determine your weight.
Metabolism is the process your body uses to burn calories for energy. Because metabolism naturally slows with age, you may need fewer daily calories as you get older. But your metabolism doesn't dictate your weight. To lose excess weight, include physical activity in your daily routine. The calories you'll burn will help promote weight loss. Second, start a strength training program. Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue does, even when you're at rest. Whether you use hand-held weights, resistance tubing or another type of resistance, you'll reduce your body fat, increase your lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently.
Weight loss: 6 strategies for success
You probably know that hundreds of different fad diets, weight-loss programs and outright scams promise quick and easy weight loss. But the foundation of every successful weight-loss program still remains a healthy diet combined with exercise. You must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits to lose significant weight and keep it off.
How do you make those permanent changes? Follow these six strategies.
1. Make a commitment
Permanent weight loss takes time and effort. It requires focus and a lifelong commitment. Make sure that you're ready to make permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons.
No one else can make you lose weight. In fact, external pressure — often from people closest to you — may make matters worse. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself.
As you're planning new weight-related lifestyle changes, try to resolve any other problems in your life. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So make sure you aren't distracted by other major life issues, such as marital or financial problems. Timing is key to success. Ask yourself if you're ready to take on the challenges of serious weight loss.
2. Get emotional support
Only you can help yourself lose weight by taking responsibility for your own behavior. But that doesn't mean that you have to do everything alone. Seek support when needed from your partner, family and friends.
Pick people who you know want only the best for you and who will encourage you. Ideally, find people who will listen to your concerns and feelings, spend time exercising with you, and share the priority you've placed on developing a healthier lifestyle.

3. Set a realistic goal
When you're considering what to expect from your new eating and exercise plan, be realistic. Healthy weight loss occurs slowly and steadily. Aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. To do this, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day through a low-calorie diet and regular exercise. Losing weight more rapidly means losing water weight or muscle tissue, rather than fat.
Make your goals "process goals," such as exercising regularly, rather than "outcome goals," such as losing 50 pounds. Changing your process — your habits — is the key to weight loss. Make sure that your process goals are realistic, specific and measurable, for example, you'll walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
4. Enjoy healthier foods
Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories need not mean giving up taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation. One way you can lower your calorie intake is by eating more plant-based foods — fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition. Cutting back on calories is easier if you focus on limiting fat.
Very low calorie diets aren't a healthy long-term strategy. Fewer than 1,200 calories a day for women and 1,400 calories for men aren't generally recommended. If your calories are too low, you run the risk of not getting all of the nutrients you need for good health.
5. Get active, stay active
Dieting alone can help you lose weight. Cutting 250 calories from your daily diet can help you lose about half a pound a week: 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of fat. But add a 30-minute brisk walk four days a week, and you can double your rate of weight loss.
The goal of exercise for weight loss is to burn more calories, although exercise offers many other benefits as well. How many calories you burn depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities. One of the best ways to lose body fat is through steady aerobic exercise — such as walking — for more than 30 minutes most days of the week.
Even though regularly scheduled aerobic exercise is best for losing fat, any extra movement helps burn calories. Lifestyle activities may be easier to fit into your day. Think about ways you can increase your physical activity throughout the day. For example, make several trips up and down stairs instead of using the elevator, or park at the far end of the lot.
6. Change your lifestyle
It's not enough to eat healthy foods and exercise for only a few weeks or even several months. You have to include these behaviors into your life. To do that, you have to change the behaviors that helped make you overweight in the first place. Lifestyle changes start with taking an honest look at your eating habits and daily routine.
After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, try working out a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. Simply admitting your own challenges won't get you past them entirely. But it helps in planning how you'll deal with them and whether you're going to succeed in losing weight once and for all.
You likely will have an occasional setback. But instead of giving up entirely, simply start fresh the next day. Remember that you're planning to change your life. It won't happen all at once, but stick to your healthy lifestyle and the results will be worth it.

Think you know your stuff when it comes to losing weight? These pesky myths seem to get the best of many of us. Let's set the record straight before they sabotage your weight loss success.
1.
The best way to lose weight is to avoid eating carbs.
Not exactly. The best way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories while enjoying a nutritious diet that includes a variety of foods. No one particular food group must be avoided to achieve a healthy weight as long as you keep your caloric intake in check. While it's smart to avoid refined carbohydrates as often as possible, foods like bread, rice, pasta, cereal, and fruit, can all be part of a healthful, balanced diet. Just try to pick complex carbs, such as whole grains and beans, over-processed foods (such as white bread) whenever possible.
2.
Genetics ultimately determine your weight.
While research has shown that biological relatives tend to have a similar body weight, that doesn't seal your fate if your parents or grandparents are obese. Those with a family history of obesity may be more likely to gain weight than those with a slimmer family tree, but that doesn't mean a healthy diet and exercise are less effective for you. No matter what, the most important factors affecting your weight are how many calories you eat and how much physical activity you get. So don't use genetics as an excuse to give up.

It's OK to switch from diet to diet.
Well, you may have to go on (and off) a diet or two before you find the right one. That said, yo-yo dieting -- or, weight cycling (meaning you repeatedly lose and then gain back weight) -- definitely isn't a good idea. Weight cycling may lead to certain health issues, such as gallbladder problems, and it's also likely to cause you to feel depressed. Avoid "crash diets" that cause a sudden weight loss; a slow and steady loss of one to two pounds a week is much healthier and far more likely to be permanent.

Fat is to be avoided.
On the contrary, some fats can actually help you with your weight-loss efforts. Of course, eating too much fat overall is linked to disease risk, such as cancer, but we all actually need a little fat in our diets to be healthy. Fat helps the body to absorb important nutrients and to feel fuller longer, which will help you eat less. Trans fat and saturated fat should be avoided, but unsaturated fats are actually good for you. Enjoy foods like fish, nuts, and olive oil, and a fat "fix" can actually do your weight and your health good.

Skipping meals is a good way to cut calories.
Meal skipping can actually cause you to gain weight since it slows down your metabolism. In fact, meal skippers tend to weigh more than people who eat regular meals. This may be due to meal

skippers' tendency to overeat later in the day to compensate for skipping breakfast or lunch. Rather than cutting out entire meals, shave off a few calories from each meal by controlling portions and finding lower-calorie alternatives to the high-calorie foods that you eat most often.

Switching to reduced-fat or fat-free foods is a sure-fire way to lose weight.
Not necessarily. Even if you have a pantry full of fat-free and low-fat foods -- such as salad dressing, crackers, and cookies -- that does not mean you can eat them to your heart's content. As with all other foods, portion control is the key to losing weight with reduced-fat foods. Even though light versions have less fat than their regular counterparts, they often have as many -- or more -- calories (some diet foods contain more sugar than the regular versions). Always read and compare nutrition labels when making selections.
7.
Following a strict diet will speed up your metabolism.
You can't change your metabolism by following a particular diet plan; what will actually cause an increase in your metabolism is exercise. Following a too-strict diet can make exercising more difficult, if not impossible. In order to have energy to exercise, you must give your body the fuel it needs. Food is that fuel, and when you follow a fad diet that provides too few calories, you're simply not filling up your tank -- you will be too weak to exercise effectively and in the end, your metabolism will stall.

Snacks: How they fit into your weight-loss plan
Well-planned, healthy snacks can complement your weight-loss plan. Here are creative and healthy ways to satisfy your hunger.
Your stomach is growling, but lunch is hours away. You could indulge yourself with a snack, but you think it's best to avoid treats altogether and wait for lunch. Not so, if weight loss is your goal.
Though you may feel guilty about snacking, snacks aren't necessarily bad. In fact, mini meals several times a day can help manage hunger and reduce bingeing. Eating a healthy snack of low-fat crackers or fruit may stop you from taking second or third helpings at your next meal, dramatically cutting the calories you consume. Also, healthy meals often lose out to busy schedules. A grab-and-go snack could be the difference between some nourishment and none at all.
The key to incorporating snacks into your weight-loss plan is to plan them with variety, moderation and balance in mind.
Choose healthy snacks
Select foods that satisfy your hunger, supply your body with energy and provide important nutrients. Here are some of your best snack picks:

Whole grains. Whole-grain snacks are rich in fiber and complex carbohydrates, which give you energy with staying power. Look for items such as low-fat whole-grain crackers, whole-grain pretzels and whole-grain crispbreads.

Fruits and vegetables. Eating fruits and vegetables provides a feeling of fullness with no fat and only a small number of calories. They also provide vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients.

Nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds provide protein, so you will feel fuller longer. They can be high in fat, but it's mostly monounsaturated, a healthy kind of fat. Nuts and seeds are high in calories, however, so don't eat them in large quantities.

Toast one-half of a whole-wheat English muffin. Top with one slice Canadian bacon, a tomato slice and one slice low-fat American cheese. Microwave until the cheese melts.

Mix 1/4 cup cold leftover chicken or convenience-type chunk chicken with sliced seedless grapes, 1/2 tablespoon sunflower seeds, 1 tablespoon plain yogurt or fat-free mayonnaise, and a dash of curry powder. Stuff into a hollowed-out green pepper or half of a whole-wheat pita pocket.

Spread 1 tablespoon part-skim ricotta cheese over one-half of a minil cinnamon-raisin bagel. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired and top with a thinly sliced apple.

Layer a 6-inch soft corn or flour tortilla with 2 tablespoons shredded low-fat cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese. Microwave until the cheese melts. Slice into bite-sized pie shapes. Dip into some salsa if desired.

Information for 7-22-23

Congratulations on your success for the first week!  This group lost a whopping 21 pounds and our biggest loser was Lisa Holtz with 5 pounds down!  Way to go everyone!!!

Oh, ohhhhhh H20!  For this next week, you are going to learn some fantastic health information about water, eating breakfast, metabolism and a little more about protein!  This week is going to be huge for you all!  Read up, dig in and get to work!  We will see you next week :)

Protein: How Much Do You Need?
Are You Getting the Right Amount of Protein?
High Protein Foods
      What is protein? How much protein do we need? Is it possible to eat too much protein?
These are important questions for people following a low carb way of eating, who usually
are replacing part of their carbohydrate intake with protein.
What is protein?
Protein is one of the basic building blocks of the human body, being about 16 percent of
our total body weight. Muscle, hair, skin, and connective tissue are mainly made up of
protein. However, protein plays a major role in all of the cells and most of the fluids in
our bodies. In addition, many of our bodies' important chemicals -- enzymes, hormones,
neurotransmitters, and even our DNA -- are at least partially made up of protein.
Although our bodies are good at “recycling” protein, we use up protein constantly, so it is
important to continually replace it.
     Proteins are made up of smaller units called amino acids. Our bodies cannot manufacture
nine amino acids, so it is important to include all these amino acids in our diets. Animal
proteins such as meat, eggs, and dairy products have all the amino acids, and many plants
have some of them. Learn more about amino acids in our diet.
How much protein do we need?
      Our protein needs depend on our age, size, and activity level. Next week you will learn
your own personal numbers. Please use the following until next week. An average
woman under 225 lbs should have 75-100 grams of protein per day. An average man
under 325 should have 125-150 grams of protein per day.
What happens if we don’t eat enough protein?
Unlike fat and glucose, our body has little capacity to store protein. If we were to stop
eating protein, our body would start to break down muscle for its needs within a day or
so.
      Is it OK to eat a lot more protein than the minimum recommendations?

      This is the crucial question for people on diets which are higher in protein than usual, as
low carb diets tend to be. In a review of the research, the National Academy of Sciences
reported that the only known danger from high animal protein diets is for individuals with
kidney disease. They point out that increased protein could be helpful in treating obesity.
There is also accumulating evidence that extra soy protein may help prevent osteoporosis.

      Extra protein can be broken down into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis. On
low carb diets, this happens continually. One benefit of obtaining glucose from protein is
that it is absorbed into the bloodstream very slowly, so it doesn’t cause a rapid blood
sugar increase.
       What foods have the most protein?
Meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and nuts all have substantial amounts of
protein. Helpful information:


Shortcut: An ounce of meat or fish has approximately 7 grams of protein.
Beef
• Hamburger patty, 4 oz – 28 grams protein
• Steak, 6 oz – 42 grams
• Most cuts of beef – 7 grams of protein per ounce
Chicken
• Chicken breast, 3.5 oz - 30 grams protein
• Chicken thigh – 10 grams (for average size)
• Drumstick – 11 grams
• Wing – 6 grams
• Chicken meat, cooked, 4 oz – 35 grams
Fish
• Most fish fillets or steaks are about 22 grams of protein for 3 ½ oz (100 grams) of cooked
fish, or 6 grams per ounce
• Tuna, 6 oz can - 40 grams of protein
Pork
• Pork chop, average - 22 grams protein
• Pork loin or tenderloin, 4 oz – 29 grams
• Ground pork, 1 oz raw – 5 grams; 3 oz cooked – 22 grams
Eggs and Dairy
• Egg, large - 6 grams protein
• Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
• Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
• Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label
• Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz

Water and Weight Loss
We have all heard about the importance of drinking those eight glasses of water a day,
but did you ever stop to think how drinking enough water might help your weight loss
efforts?
Water Works!
Here is what one successful weight loss members says about drinking enough water and
being at the top of her list of weight loss tactics:
"To me, the most beneficial weight loss strategy is drinking plenty of water. At least two
liters a day makes a huge difference, and it's really not as hard as it seems after you do for
a few days. Not only does it help shed pounds, but it improves your complexion, too!"
Another successful loser knows all about the wonders of water. She has found that water
is a worthy adversary against cravings. When a visitor recently asked if drinking enough
water is really all that important to weight loss, she had a lot to say:
"I have to personally vouch that it works. Not only is it completely healthy for you and
something you should be doing already, it's also a natural appetite suppressant. In fact,
many times when you feel hungry for a snack, you are really just thirsty. It's really easy
to train your body to crave water instead of a candy bar; if I am tempted, I immediately
grab my water and take a large gulp. I bring water to work in a large sport container so I
can drink it there too. People call me the 'Water Girl'!"
Did You Know You May Be Dehydrated?
One of our modern comforts actually contributes to dehydration. Air conditioning and
heating systems in offices, homes, even cars decrease the humidity in the air. On average,
we lose about 10 cups of water a day. That's pretty scary when you realize that our bodies
are predominantly made up of water!
The weather plays a big part in dehydration, too -- especially in these dog days of
summer. It is extremely important to drink enough water when you are going to be
playing, working or exercising outside in the heat. If you begin to feel weak or dizzy,
then it's time to cool down. Nausea may indicate that you are beginning to experience
heat illness. If your symptoms do not improve, or, they worsen, do not hesitate to seek
medical attention. Heat stroke claims many lives every year, especially in unusually hot
summers like the heat wave much of the U.S. is experiencing at the moment.

      Being thirsty is not the only symptom of dehydration. In fact, once you actually feel
physical thirst, you may be well on your way to dehydration. Other signs of dehydration
are dark or foul-smelling urine. Even mild dehydration is not only perilous to renal
(kidney) function, but it can also have other physical and psychological ramifications like
severe headaches or decreased concentration levels.
      Did You Know if You Drink Soda, You Should Drink More Water?
A friend on the program related to me that her coach told her group that each time she
drank a diet soda that she should in turn drink two extra glasses of water (in addition to
recommended daily amount). That's because drinking sodas and other beverages that
contain caffeine actually contributes to dehydration. These types of beverages act as
diuretics and cause us to empty our bladders more often.
Water Yourself
      The good news is, water is available in lots of forms; you don't have to get bored with the
water cooler at the office or by visiting the water fountain numerous times a day. Instead,
keep a nice cold bottle on hand at all times. In the meantime, you can increase the amount
of water you're taking in by eating foods that contain a high water content like fruits and
vegetables.
      You also should keep in mind the heat and humidity factors as well as your exercise and
work habits. If you are exercising, you need to drink more water than the average person
before, during and after your workout. If you are doing strenuous labor, or outdoors work
in the heat, you will definitely want to go over the minimum as well. How much is
enough? Six cups is okay; eight cups is great and 10 cups is super.
"But I Don't Like Water!"
       Try adding lime slices, lemon juice, even peppermint to your water to add a little zing to
it. You may find in time you simply develop a taste for plain water. Think back to when
you were a kid. Were there a few vegetables you simply couldn't tolerate? Did you ever
get caught hiding them in your napkin or trying to get the dog to eat it? Do you eat any of
those vegetables now? Do you actually enjoy them? Over time you developed a taste for
the offending veggie. Although most of us have grown very used to drinking our sodas,
coffee or tea and the thought of drinking plain water makes us cringe, in time, you will
find that you not only enjoy drinking water, you will crave it.
Another trick is to buy seltzer or carbonated mineral water in the beginning and add your
citrus or mint flavorings to give the impression of soda. You could try the diet flavored
waters like Clearly Canadian. After you have adjusted from having soda as a mainstay,
you may gradually begin seeing that what you really want is the plain water and you can
in turn give up the "zing" and the "fizz" of soda altogether.
Are You Hungry or Thirsty?

      Many successful "losers" swear by using an ice-cold glass of water to curb their food
cravings. If you don't believe it works, why not give it a try? When you feel the urge to
splurge coming on, try downing an entire glass of water and see if your craving is still
around afterwards. Try not to gulp all of it down at once, though. Sip it slowly and give
your brain time to register the fact that you have just been hydrated.

      If your craving has dissipated after you finish off that glass of water, then that just goes to
show you weren't experiencing "true hunger." If you do feel actual hunger pangs at that
point, by all means, eat. However sometimes when we think we feel hungry, we are
actually thirsty. Our bodies are dehydrated and we get our "wires crossed" and start a
feeding frenzy instead of giving our bodies what they really need -- hydration.
Fill 'Er Up
       Second, another way drinking water may help you lose weight is by making you feel
fuller. The trick here is to be consistent. Drinking one extra glass of water isn't going to
help you feel satiated throughout the day. You've got to keep water on hand and cold, or
else you probably won't keep the habit up. If you have access to a refrigerator at work,
perfect. Put a gallon carton in the fridge in the morning and help yourself throughout the
day. If you work at a place that has a water cooler, that's even better.
       If you don't have a refrigerator or watering hole, why not carry one of the small picnic
coolers and stock it with small bottles of water? Keep it next to your chair or under your
desk. Other tricks include buying a sports bottle or one of those insulated mugs with a lid
on it. Fill it up in the morning and refill it from the kitchen, break room or bathroom sink
throughout the day.
A Final Word
      So you want one more reason to drink water? Last but not least, some weight loss experts
say that drinking ice cold water may even speed up your metabolism!
Drinking water is like any other healthy behavior: you have to make a habit of it in order
to stick with it. If you can, then your general health as well as your weight loss efforts
will benefit from the power of H20!
